A2B Excellence has a rich heritage in civils and construction; but the majority of our work has been in rail. In the past year, we have begun to apply our programme improvement methodologies to highways too – and just in time: Chancellor Philip Hammond has announced over £1bn in spending to improve Britain’s roads. We have been working in partnership with TRL, the UK’s leading independent strategic transport business, to build coherent, forward-thinking highways infrastructure propositions. As long-standing partners in TRL’s highways consortium (also including civil engineering giants, Jacobs and Costain, and environmental consultancy, the Temple Group) we were therefore …

Partnership with Sideways 6: Engagement in the palm of your hand

nick partnerships Leave a Comment

Here at A2B Excellence, we haven’t stopped banging on about employee engagement for at least four years. We’ve won awards, we’ve changed large organisations and positively affected their futures and outcomes. But as employee engagement has become a buzzword in its own right, it’s easy to forget exactly what it looks like on the ground. So let’s revisit. Long before the term became commonplace, we used to say something fundamental which has become a part of the soul of our business: “The greatest overall improvements in output and efficiency today won’t come from shaving costs, the upheaval of endless reorganisations …

In this interesting article from the BBC, a fund manager, Neil Woodford, explains why he has stopped paying bonuses to his staff. Instead, his team will get an increase in pay and benefits. I think this is interesting – not because Mr Woodford is doing something new, but because he is being honest. He says that bonuses have become a given; something his employees feel they are entitled to. And in financial services, he is probably right. Therefore, they should not be called bonuses, because they are not incentivising improved activity. There is another argument that in financial services, where the media …

Brexit for Infrastructure: Strong Leadership Required

nick Collaborative Planning, Comment, Homepage, Performance Deep Dive, Transformation Leave a Comment

So the people of Britain have pushed the nuclear button on our relationship with Europe. As the analysts (and financial tipsters) pick their jaws up off the floor, let’s examine the effect on the major infrastructure and construction industries. The chances of a Scottish block or a second referendum for England are extremely low, but there’s a big difference between complete disengagement and an arms-length relationship. There is therefore plenty of uncertainty: Right to play: Our right to bid to participate in projects depends on the nature of our new relationship. If we remain in the EEA and still play …

It’s a great example of the sort of structure which is prevalent in complex projects, and where engagement efforts can yield exceptional results in motivation, productivity and outputs. The 4LM management team’s commitment has led to independently verified improvements in …

The ‘no-blame’ fallacy – and a more productive alternative

nick Comment, Facilitation, Homepage, Training Leave a Comment

For at least a decade, the idea of a “No blame culture” has been a watchword of modern business. Nobody wants to work in an environment where people who ought to work together are too busy sniping and protecting their own empires to do a great job. It’s a good logic: the effort involved in protectionism in an ultra-competitive environment is a huge waste of a company’s resources and talent. A business which models itself on civil war can expect the same devastation and lack of productive, targeted effort as a real war . But is a “No blame culture” …

Solving the Executive Pay Challenge

Solving the Executive Pay Challenge

nick Comment, engagement, Homepage, Transformation Leave a Comment

The executive pay gap is at unprecedented levels. In the 1970s, pay in the C-Suite was at 10-30 times shop-floor levels. In 2015, it’s not unusual for top execs to earn 200+ times the pay of their workers in the engine room. And according to the CIPD, this is affecting employee motivation. They say that executive pay is at crisis point, not only because of the disparity, but also because there appears to be no link between pay and performance. Endless stories in an avid media of the top table with their mouths in the trough, or public sector leaders leaving their …

Here’s an interesting article from Jon Tudor, reporting on an employee engagement event he recently ran. To summarise, the headline comment from his delegates was: “I wish my board was here, they need to learn and understand this”. Why don’t board-level managers seem to take an interest in employee engagement? After all, they take plenty of interest in change management and transformational programmes. How can employee engagement rise up the agenda? Here are some thoughts on the problem, and some possible solutions: Engagement is a new discipline, and sometimes nobody owns it. A few forward-thinking tech businesses have Chief Engagement Officers, but they’re …
