We’ve lived the first week of new timetables across the rail network, so how’s that going for the industry? Not as well as we might have expected. Monday’s complaints from hard-pressed commuters included “New timetable and a packed train just cancelled as no driver in London to take over. Triumph of Thameslink.” According to the Guardian, “Throughout the day, between half and a third of timetabled trains across the new enlarged network were being cancelled.” And it might not have been ideal for Go-Ahead to report healthy profits in the same week, either… But before we poke GTR (an A2B Excellence client) with a stick, let’s …

Tick-TOC: Times are changing for train operating companies

Nobody said it was easy being a ToC. Consumers hate them, yet ToCs are at the mercy of government (and neither side of the political spectrum has managed to structure the ideal system), their advisors from the big consultancy firms, and all sorts of unpredictable socio-economic changes. We’ve been lucky enough to work with a TOC recently, and a few very simple things have become apparent. First, no matter what happens, TOCs are under pressure from dramatically competing priorities, which will not be resolved anytime soon: Short term: Quarterly earnings reports and market pressure Mid-term: The franchise bidding cycle Long-term: …

At A2B Excellence, we are over the moon to have been invited back to the Young Rail Professionals meet-up group on 10th September. It’s always a pleasure to present at YRP – the Q&A is bracing and everyone is more than prepared to question the status quo – something we advocate and love! At YRP, we’re under the spotlight of some of the brightest brains of tomorrow’s rail industry management. This session was led by A2B stalwarts, Drew Barritt and Cari Hewer, and instead of focusing exclusively on rail industry issues, we looked at broader social challenges in the job market …

We love it when our friends and advocates get a bit of recognition. We’ve been working with Graeme Shaw (now Head of the prestigious Northern Line Extension project in London) for several years, and he has unfailingly blown the trumpet for A2B methodologies: empowered staff, inbuilt simplicity and Lean attitudes as well as Lean processes. Graeme will be speaking for the second year running at the Lean Construction Institute UK’s annual Summit (date etc. to be announced shortly). If you can’t wait, see him in action as part of this LCI video of the 2014 event. Graeme is not just an …

An Autumn Statement for Infrastructure

admin Comment, Homepage Leave a Comment

Now, I know what you’re thinking. The big project in Chancellor Osborne’s Autumn Statement was the announcement that Britain will play a leading role in the international programme for the exploration of Mars. Nothing wrong with a bit of ambition, but let’s focus closer to home. Britain has done quite a good job of commissioning infrastructure projects to prime the economic pump since the recession began in 2008. Whether you agree with the projects or not (HS2, I’m talking about you…), we know that Big Construction brings big benefits. Crossrail is 75% done, HS2 is on its way, there will …
